Grossmont Math Teacher Earns County's Top Honor
Kristen LoPrell named San Diego County Teacher of the Year
EL CAJON - Grossmont High School Math teacher Kristen LoPrell has been named one of five San Diego County Teachers of the Year by the San Diego County Office of Education.
Ms. LoPrell has served as a Grossmont High School (GHS) Math teacher since 2015 and currently serves as Math Department Chair. She has served as an academic league coach, freshman orientation leader, and math coach. She has also updated course pathways to provide access to all levels of honors math for all students. As an adjunct professor at Point Loma Nazarene University, where she earned both her Bachelor of Science in Math and Master of Teaching degrees, she taught courses in research methods and best practices for statistical analysis and also guided new teachers in math practices, classroom management, and instruction.
“Kristen LoPrell is a brilliant teacher who has strengthened our educational program and helped so many Grossmont High School students discover the beauty of mathematics,” said GUHSD Superintendent Mary Beth Kastan. “In a graduation speech last June, Grossmont’s salutatorian thanked Ms. LoPrell for helping her to love math and stated that, because of Ms. Loprell’s influence, she was considering becoming a math major in college. This and so many other stories that have been shared with me testify to the fact that Ms. Loprell is truly empowering students to build the best future,” Kastan added.
“Kristen’s ability to connect with students on a personal level, combined with her mastery of mathematical concepts has enabled her to inspire confidence and enthusiasm for learning in even the most reluctant learners,” said fellow GHS Math Teacher Emilie King. “Her dedication, passion and tireless advocacy for student success make her an invaluable asset to our school community,” added King.
Since 1974, the San Diego County Office of Education’s Teacher of the Year Award has recognized teachers from across the region for their commitment to teaching and learning. Ms. Loprell will now represent San Diego County in the California Teacher of the Year program, the winners of which will be announced in October.
