It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Eugene “Gene” Chubb in his Santee home on Thursday, February 3rd. Gene has been a part of our East County community from the moment he was born in La Mesa. In 1948, Gene graduated from Grossmont High School and his family founded La Mesa Block Company. Gene then moved on to San Diego State University where he met Marvin Finch, owner of R.C.P. Company and who would eventually become his business partner. Gene took a break from the company for a couple years starting in 1952 to serve in the United States Army during the Korean War. The merger of Gene and Marvin’s companies to form R.C.P. Block & Brick, Inc. occurred in 1966 and the company has grown to take its place as a leading manufacturer in San Diego and beyond. Gene has been recognized and has received awards from multiple organizations during his 68 years of involvement in the block industry.
Gene moved to Santee in 1969 and quickly delved into the community and watched it grow throughout the years. He became involved in the Santee Chamber of Commerce and took positions in Chamber leadership for many years and remained involved with the Chamber even after his retirement. It was our pleasure to name him our Honorary Chairman of the 2016 Black Tie Gala. He gave his time to the community in his involvement in his roles in the Boys and Girls Club Foundation and the Santee-Lakeside Rotary for almost twenty years. He donated to countless youth organizations, sports teams, schools, churches and community projects throughout Santee and beyond. His giving attitude and commitment to the City of Santee and the entire East County region can be seen in a track record that spans decades.
Services are being planned and we send our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Susie, and his extended family. Gene was a beloved member of our community and will be missed dearly.
