    Hello Santee!
Tuesday night I did something for my very first time: I took a kickboxing class. This wasn’t just any class, it was an experience! Recently CKO Kickboxing Santee offered a promotion I couldn’t pass up ($19.99 for three classes and a pair of starter gloves). I came in about 20 minutes before the start of class so I could fill out the obligatory form and get a brief orientation. I was welcomed by owner, Bonnie Danieli, with her usual cheery attitude and beaming smile. After the quick tour around the facility, I was introduced to the instructor for my upcoming hour-long class. She taught me a few basics about the types of hits and kicks she’d be calling out through the class and showed me how to properly apply them to the 125 pound bag hanging in front of me. After my first kick to the bag, and realizing how weak the kick was, she was so supportive and reassured me that focusing on my form was most important (speed and strength were to follow). The class began soon enough and the music was on point (thanks to Brenton for a new playlist!). It was seriously hard work to get through the entire 60 minutes but there was so much about it that I loved. The clean and open environment in the gym. The instructor’s energy, attitude and encouragement. The designated space for just me to workout and sweat within. The other participants of men and women of all ages and body type. The fact that each of us could easily adjust and go at our own pace, creating an individual workout for all levels yet feeling like part of a team at the same time. Although my legs are still sore more than 24 hours later, I’m excited to get back in there and sweat it out again.
