Wednesday was a very special day in town. We held a small groundbreaking ceremony for what will soon be home to the Santee Veterans Memorial. This project is something that has been a longtime dream of resident and business owner, Dustin Trotter (TDT Construction) but he has been able to move it forward in his short time so far as he is serving his first term on City Council. For those who haven't heard about this project, it will be fast and furious. Being 100% self-funded, the Santee Chamber became the fiscal agent and started fundraising at the end of May and we are well over 90% of our goal, just after just roughly three months of efforts.
After the groundbreaking ceremony, the public was invited out to sign the beams which will be used atop the memorial. Although the signatures will be covered in construction materials and eventually stucco, the names will forever be inside the monument. It was our privilege and honor to include the names of the 13 heroes who came home last week from Kabul, among many others who served, including Santee resident and WWII Vet, Joe Riley. Thank you to all who came out to celebrate the beginning of something that will impact our community for years to come.
